Shipping Your First RAG Chatbot
Retrieval-augmented generation lets an assistant answer from your own documents. A practical look at what it takes to ship one.
Why RAG
Large language models are fluent but forgetful. They don't know your internal docs, your policies, or last week's release notes. Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) fixes this by fetching the right context at query time and handing it to the model alongside the question.
The core pipeline
A working RAG system is simpler than it sounds. It comes down to four steps:
- Ingest: split your documents into chunks and store them.
- Embed: turn each chunk into a vector so it can be searched by meaning.
- Retrieve: for each question, pull the most relevant chunks.
- Generate: pass those chunks to the model with a grounded prompt.
Where teams get stuck
The hard part is rarely the model. It's the data. Messy PDFs, inconsistent chunking, and stale content quietly erode answer quality. Spend your effort on clean ingestion and good retrieval. The generation step mostly takes care of itself.
Measuring success
Don't ship on vibes. Build a small evaluation set of real questions with known good answers, and track how often your assistant gets them right. That number is your north star.
